Postmodern mouldings reinterpret familiar trim shapes through exaggerated scale, unexpected combinations, and playful references to historical design. Half rounds and other basic geometric profiles are especially characteristic, using bold proportions to turn simple forms into prominent architectural details. Traditional shapes can also become part of the composition, bringing historical references into contemporary interiors.
The treatment of corners and ends contributes to the style’s distinctive character. Profiles may terminate with square cuts that expose their shape, making the end detail part of the design. Around doors, windows, and wall treatments, oversized mouldings and contrasting forms create opportunities for the asymmetry, color, and visual humor associated with Postmodern architecture.
