Palladian mouldings express the clarity and measured proportions associated with Andrea Palladio’s interpretation of classical Roman architecture. Fillets, ovolos, coves, cymas, and conges form the basis of these profiles, with restrained decoration allowing their contours to define the design. Used selectively, the mouldings reinforce the symmetry and order central to the style.
In Palladian interiors, carefully proportioned cornices, pediments, and surrounds connect individual details to the room’s larger architectural composition. Simple profiles can complement more elaborate features, including columns and formal doorways, while maintaining a balanced appearance. The emphasis remains on the scale, placement, and relationship of each element.
