The possibilities for moulding design are nearly endless, but certain forms and proportions consistently create more successful compositions. Fillets, beads, coves, rounds, ogees and other basic shapes can be scaled, extended and combined to create profiles that are balanced, useful and visually pleasing.
The drawings below begin with standard S4S blanks and simple profile forms, then progress into more complex combinations. They show how traditional mouldings are developed and how the same basic shapes can be adapted for casing, baseboard, crown, cornice and other architectural applications.
These profiles are intended as reliable starting points for the design of custom and historically informed mouldings.
