Choosing Stair Parts for Your Project

When it comes time to build your staircase, you’ll need to stock up on a variety of wood stair parts. The type and style of your parts will depend on the style of the staircase you plan to build. The guide below can help you narrow your search.

Newel Posts

Newel posts are the wooden stair parts that support the handrail. Each post will have a newel cap. Both posts and caps come in a variety of soft and hardwoods, including white oak, hemlock, ash, oak, and maple. Find posts that match the style of the balusters you select to ensure you create a more symmetrical staircase.

The right newel post for your staircase sets the theme for the rest of the design. From historically inspired Victorian and craftsman to modern newel post designs, we can craft every part of your staircase.

Stair Balusters

Stair balusters, or spindles, provide vertical support for railings and increase the safety of your staircase. They’re also an important decorative feature. Our team of woodworkers can craft a variety of custom turnings and intricate baluster designs

Determine whether you’re building an open-string or closed-string staircase. Strings within a staircase refer to the sides that hold the risers and treads. If you have a closed-string staircase, these edges of the stairs will remain hidden.

In contrast, with an open- or cut-string staircase, the wood balusters are visible. For an open or cut string staircase, choose baluster styles that include colonial, barley twist, fluted, square, or plain-turned spindles.

Handrails & Fittings

Our mill has a collection of modern and historic handrails available to purchase or inspire. We can also mill custom handrail profiles to complete your staircase. Find a profile and complete a custom quote request, or share image files and renderings with our team.

Matching the Handrails and Base Rails

You will choose handrails and base rails that match the rest of the custom stair parts you previously selected. Match the type of wood and design style for a more cohesive look and a better fit. Choose grooved or ungrooved rails to match the design you have for your balusters.

Stair Risers & Treads

Stair treads are the core component of every staircase. From remodels to new builds, The Hardwood Lumber Company, a Mouldings One sister business, crafts quality hardwood treads for any style of stairs. Visit their site and complete your online order with ease.
