Shoe

Shoe

Shoe moulding, also known as “base shoe,” is a thin strip of moulding that runs along the bottom of baseboards. It is used both as a decorative element and to hide any unevenness or gaps in between the baseboard and floor. Not to be confused with quarter-round (another type of baseboard finishing trim), shoe moulding is often preferred for its sleek, narrow appearance.

Using Base Shoe Moulding

Shoe moulding is often used to help seal baseboards, serving to keep dirt and insects out. It can also hide imperfections where the floor meets the baseboard, giving any space a more polished look overall.

Many homeowners often rather use various shoe molding styles over quarter round. This is because quarter-round molding is short and thick. Base shoe moulding is much more versatile, especially in homes that want a clean or modern aesthetic.

Wood is the material most commonly used to make shoe moulding, as its durability is unmatched compared to other materials like fiberboard. This moulding provides both form and function, and you can use it anywhere you have a baseboard to tidy up a room with imperfections.

Tips for Installation

If you want to add finish to your shoe molding, make sure to do so before you install it; it’s significantly easier to handle at this stage. Another key tip is to ensure that you anchor it with nails on every foot, verifying that the nails go into your baseboard.

Finally, you can practice your cutting and fitting with waste trim so that you aren’t accidentally wasting your trim by miscutting it.

Find the Right Style for You at Mouldings One

There are many style possibilities with base shoe moulding. It can be stained or painted to match the baseboards or the floors. It can also be stained/painted in a complimentary color for added contrast. Mouldings One offers a selection of decorative shoe mouldings in a variety of wood species like Maple, Pine, Oak, and Poplar. Browse our selection and be sure to contact us if you have any questions. We’re happy to help you find the perfect look for your project.
