Plinth Block

Plinth Block

Plinth blocks were historically used as masonry support bases but today they are simply a decorative feature installed at the bottom of door casings, columns, and pilasters. When selecting a size for your plinth block, keep in mind that it should be thicker than the baseboard and door trim. This not only makes the plinth moulding stand out, but also covers up baseboards and door casings that are not flush.

Incorporation Plinth Block

Plinth block moulding provides a unique decorative look. It’s becoming more commonplace in modern homes that still want a subtle but traditional touch.

Plinth block trim can also be used to cover up gaps and imperfections. It creates a seamless way to bridge the architrave and the floor while also making the room more visually appealing.

Advantages of a Plinth Block

A plinth block is fantastic for installing skirting board covers if you plan to leave your original architraves where they are. Installing them here eliminates any unseemly overlapping or protrusion and makes what would otherwise be a full design overhaul something much simpler.

It can further simplify other moulding projects by eliminating the need for complex cuts. You can achieve a flush, clean finish on architraves and even use a plinth block to connect architraves and skirting boards together.

As far as aesthetics go, plinth blocks can facilitate both a traditional and modern design. But they have an additional advantage in older homes since they often have walls that are not as straight or flush as those in contemporary homes.

You likely won’t find this issue in modern homes. However, many contemporary designs still benefit from a plinth block if you want to enhance some existing detailed skirting.

Plinth moulding should at least sit at the same height as the baseboard, but many designers choose plinth blocks that are taller than the base moulding. Keep proper proportions in mind as you select a width and height for your plinth blocks. Mouldings One has a wide selection of premium wood mouldings. Can’t find the right look for your renovation?
