Transition Mold
As its name suggests, transition moulding serves a functional purpose by providing a smooth transition between two separate sections of flooring. It’s also used to create a clean transition in the space where the floor meets a wall.
Certain flooring materials require an expansion gap, providing the material room as it expands as a result of heat, moisture, or other conditions. Transition moulding is used to cover these expansion gaps. This is done to prevent tripping on the gap and to create an attractive, seamless appearance.
How to Incorporate Floor Transition Strips Into Your Design
Once you recognize the importance of floor transitions, you’ll need to turn your attention toward choosing a complementary color and style. The type of transition strip you use matters as much as deciding to use one at all.
These tips can help you pick the perfect strip to match your decorating style:
Choose a Bold Transition Strip
After you choose a wood transition strip, you’ll probably paint or apply a finish to it. Most people try to match the strip to the flooring in one or both rooms. Instead, it’s best to pick a color that helps the strip stand out. You’ll want people to notice the transition, especially if you’re transitioning from two types of flooring of varying thickness or texture. A bold color warns of a flooring transition.
Upgrade to Saddle Transitions
A full or half saddle transition sits flat against the subfloor and provides a transition layer on top of both sides of the flooring, resembling an H-shape. Saddle transitions are sturdier and longer-lasting. Choose a full saddle when connecting two similar types of flooring (carpet to carpet, tile to tile, etc.) and a half saddle when connecting flooring of varying types or materials, such as connecting tile to carpeting.
