Window Sill

Window Sill

Window sills are both a decorative and functional type of millwork. Sills play an important role in the structural integrity of a window, help prevent water damage, and act as a layer of insulation from outside elements. Historically, there have been many forms of window sills, and Mouldings One has a variety of profile options for any style.

What Is the Best Wood for Window Sill Replacements?

If you’re installing new, energy-efficient windows, you might want to replace your window sills at the same time. A new wood window sill offers more protection and enhances the beauty of your home.

However, before taking on such a project, consider the best type of wood for your windows.

White Oak

You can make any room look brighter and larger with white oak. That’s because this type of wood comes in lighter shades, ranging from light tan to medium brown. A window sill made from white oak also resists sun bleaching, as the wood is resistant to UV rays. It’s also rot-resistant, eliminating the worry of potential water damage.

Knotty Pine

Most people overlook knotty pine when designing their window sill trim because it is a softwood. Even so, pressurized knotty pine is highly resistant to water, UV rays, other damaging environmental factors, and pest infestations.

Cherry Wood

A wood window sill made from cherry wood is extremely strong and durable. You can also take advantage of the wood’s natural red-brown color by adding a clear finish. And since the grain in cherry wood runs straight, it creates a streamlined design that’s perfect for window trim.
