Constructed in 1798 by Edward Burd and named the house after a village near Edinburgh, Scotland where his father was born. The City of Philadelphia purchased the mansion and land in 1869 which was used as a residence for park employees at Fairmount Park and was home to the Fairmount Park Art Association. The Royal Heritage Society has preserved and maintained the home since 1982.
